In today’s music classroom, however, there are many tech tools that help teachers communicate the art of music making to their students. On Thursday, March 12, I left school fully intending to be back in the morning. We were canceling classes the following Monday to have a teacher in-service on how to teach remotely, “just in case,” so I was mentally planning on what items I might need to bring home. At midnight, an email came in to notify us that one of our colleagues had tested positive for COVID-19 and, concurrent with the Governor of Michigan’s declaration, school would be closed until further notice. At that moment, I knew I would have to teach in a new and unfamiliar way and to begin doing it in five days without returning to our building.

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and maker education are viewed and defined differently no matter where you go. To me, the focus of any work in my STEM classes or in my makerspace is on the process and not the product. But STEM shouldn’t be viewed as a “special class” or a separate subject. There are ways to integrate STEM education and making throughout the school year and in every subject.

Just a few short weeks ago we saw, heard, and hugged some of our best friends almost daily. Now the world has been turned upside down and we are all trying to find a new normal. I’m reminded of the graphic below. This is truly what it feels like right now. We were on a pretty solid upward trajectory, with a few bumps in the road. Now we’re squarely in the middle of chaos and we realize we will come out higher, stronger, and better than ever.

How many times as educators have we uttered a version of these phrases? “We don’t have time for that” or “I would love to do that but I don’t have time.”
Suddenly, guess what we have? Time. Unexpectedly we have received the gift of time. The gift of time to do those things we never have time to do. We have the gift of time as educators. We have the gift of time as learners. We have the gift of time as parents.

Super skills, twenty-first century skills, best practices—whatever you want to call the 4C’s (creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication), they are an integral part of the student experience in our classroom. Even so, sometimes a pathway to incorporate the 4C’s may seem evasive or like it takes too much time. Adding the following tools and ideas to an instructional toolbox can support a seamless incorporation of the 4C’s into our teaching and learning for all students.
