I’m middle-aged. However, when I look at all of the opportunities students have today to learn, I feel young again. Flexible learning spaces, multiple literacies, maker spaces, and coding with kids are ideas that didn't exist when I was young. As an education technology professional and one-time middle school English teacher, coding with kids and coding as literacy are especially appealing to me.

For years, I have been giving presentations on “Working Smarter, Not Harder: Tech Tools for Administrators.” While this talk has been aimed at school administrators, it has tools for anyone working in a school setting or anyone who is trying to streamline their workday. I have always enjoyed technology and the ability to utilize it for “good,” so anything that helps in that respect is a win for me!

You thought we needed character education before? Just wait.
We would like traditional character education to be so solid in its perspective that it can survive modern times without much modification. But the character education we have grown up with began during simpler, far less technological times. The reality is that the extreme nature of today’s technology is challenging the relevance of character education in its current form.

There are many new and exciting technology tools continually at the disposal of educators. But before you partake in the latest tech tools, I encourage you to pause and reflect on how the technology impacts instruction.

When I first started teaching 29 years ago, being safe and secure meant having fire drills and locking windows and doors at the end of the day. How times have changed! Today, digital privacy and security have been added to the physical safety of schools. Students are becoming increasingly savvy with technology, but they may not always realize how public their online information is. Because of this, educators must learn how to teach their students online security and safety.
