3-Dimensional Learning Through an Interdisciplinary STEAM Curriculum

Cereal City Science offers a phenomenon-based K–8 science curriculum designed for the Next Generation Science Standards by integrating science, mathematics, and literacy through an interdisciplinary approach. The STEAM curriculum, materials, and professional learning are all designed to support district and classroom implementation of 3-Dimensional Learning and build science leadership capacity within an organization. The shift to 3-Dimensional Learning allows students to explore real-world phenomena in an ongoing process of questioning, investigating, developing, and refining explanatory models about the world. The National Research Council’s framework describes a vision of 3-Dimensional Learning that includes science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas.

The Cereal City Science program provides 3-Dimensional science instruction in the classroom for students to engage in all four domains of science proficiency (physical science, earth science, life science, and engineering). Designed with the 5E Learning Cycle (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate), the curriculum’s instructional units include opportunities for interaction in the classroom as students figure out phenomenon, raise questions and carry out investigations, talk and write about their observations, and work together to revise their thinking, build knowledge, and discuss and carry out ways to test their understanding.
