Thanks to the camera on the smartphone, it has never been easier to capture a moment in time, but no matter how well a shot is composed, sometimes a picture just can’t convey the true scale or intensity of the scene, such as a majestic waterfall. Enlight Pixaloop, an app for iOS and Android devices from Lightricks Ltd, seamlessly bridges the gap between still photography and video with tools that anyone can master. To start, users import an image that can benefit from some movement and place arrows, or “paths,” on the screen to define that motion. They then add anchors to create boundaries for the portion they want animated. With their finger, they paint areas to “freeze” and protect from the transformations. For example, they can draw up and down arrows on a flag and then block out the surrounding skyline. Or they can use left and right paths to create flowing water in a pool while leaving the rest of the environment still. After they hit Play, Pixaloop moves the annotated zones of the image along the lines users have drawn. They can experiment with the speed and looping until they get it just right. When they are happy with their creation, users can export it in a range of formats and sizes for personal use or for social media. Costs: Free, with in-app purchases for unlimited access, starting at $3.99.
