Community Connecting Classrooms to Sow the Seeds of Democratic Citizenship
The Coalition of Civically Engaged Educators (CCEE) is a resource for those committed to teaching civic knowledge, values, and behaviors. Membership in this free nonpartisan and nonprofit organization consists of prekindergarten to high school teachers, as well as educators at nonprofit organizations and in afterschool programs. Upcoming CCEE programs include “Socially Distant Democracy,” in which teachers will join fellow educators in discussing how best to engage children in democratic processes, given the limitations of the COVID-19 epidemic; “My Country, Myself,” in which a veteran educator in Manhattan will guide teachers in using the arts to explore student identities and their concept of country; “Circle Time, Social Justice Time,” presenting ways to effectively use circle time as a vital moment to teach social justice issues; and “Disinformation in the Digital Age,” providing educators with the opportunity to share resources and strategies on how to prepare students to cope with the unique challenge of disinformation in our contemporary media environment.
The renewed focus on civics education in this country provides a promising path for readying students for the challenges of twenty-first century citizenship. The Council on Foreign Relations has created a free curriculum to facilitate this critical work. Educators are invited to explore the library of curriculum units—Global Era Issues; Regions of the World; and How the World Works—and Sometimes Doesn’t.
