Funds for Replenishing School Libraries Affected by Disasters

Dollar General, in collaboration with the American Library Association (ALA), the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and the National Education Association (NEA), sponsors the Beyond Words school library disaster relief fund for public school libraries in the states served by Dollar General. The fund will provide grants to public schools with library programs that have been affected by a natural disaster (tornado, earthquake, hurricane, flood, avalanche, mudslide), fire, or an act recognized by the federal government as terrorism. Grants are to replace or supplement books, media, and/or library equipment in the school library setting. Schools may qualify based on direct damage or loss, or due to increased enrollment of students displaced by a disaster. Most awards will be $10,000; however, larger amounts (up to $20,000) may be awarded based on the level of destruction and/or hardship the library has suffered. The program also features a website devoted to disaster preparedness and recovery, with resources and a toolkit to help school librarians prepare for and deal with natural disasters and terrorist acts.

Deadlines: Monthly, for general Beyond Words applications; catastrophic grants applications must be submitted between April 1 and March 31 to be considered.
