Game Integrating Computational Thinking and Environmental Problem Solving
The New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) pioneered Design–Make–Play, a novel approach to learning and engagement, drawing on deeper learning research and supporting the creation of learning experiences that develop critical thinking, knowledge integration, innovation, and creativity skills. One of NYSCI’s newest resources, an open-world game anyone can play, brings Design–Make–Play to the worlds of computational thinking and environmentalproblem solving. The game, called The Pack, is set in a future world where healthy ecosystems have faltered and resources are scarce. To restore the environment, players embark on an open-ended quest to find food and water by using their “Pack”—creatures that have unique functions such as digging, moving, holding, grabbing, and repeating. When their Pack has more than one type of creature, players combine them into algorithms to perform tasks and overcome challenges. As they advance, players create more complex algorithms that allow them to do new things. ThePack is free to download for Mac OSX and Windows.

CoderZ has kicked off registration for the third annual Cyber Robotics Coding Competition (CRCC) for students in grades 5–8. This online coding and robotics tournament enables schools, districts, and afterschool programs and clubs to engage students in STEM learning by using game-based competitions that are both safe and fun.
