Great Communicator Debate Competition

The Ronald Reagan Foundation & Institute established the Ronald Reagan Great Communicator Debate Series to develop engaged, informed, and conscientious citizen leaders by hosting a national series of debates for high school students who effectively use logic, evidence, and personality to communicate their ideas. This debate series encourages students to join the conversation on issues the United States faces. It is comprised of five in-person and one online qualifying competition, culminating in a National Championship. The two finalists from each of the six regions, the top-two extemporaneous speaker and orator from the National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament, and the top-two debaters from the National Urban Debate League compete in the National Championship at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Southern California. Competitors who qualify for the National Championship will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. The three-day trip will include a private tour of the library, dinner under the wings of Air Force One, and a chance to meet an extraordinary group of young leaders. The National Championship prizes include a total of $50,000 in scholarships: the debate champion will receive $10,000; the runner-up, $7,500; third- and fourth-place winners, $5,000 each; fifth- through eighth-place winners, $2,500 each; and ninth- through sixteenth-place winners, $1,500 each. The top-two school debate clubs will receive a stipend of $250 each.

Deadlines: Regional competitions will take place between February 8, 2020, and May 9, 2020; specific dates for each region’s competition appear on the website. Online competition will take place on May 20, 2020. National finals will occur from July 23 to July 26, 2020.
