Hands-on At-Home Science Activities
The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago builds bridges between youth and science, both inside and outside the classroom. On the museum’s Science at Home website, children can keep learning in place and at their own pace with science activities and topics they can access anytime. Among the hands-on activities are the “Egg Drop Challenge,” in which students design a landing craft to get a raw egg safely to ground, and “Sound Sandwich” in which students create music using rubber bands. The website also presents videos to enhance science learning. For example, students can watch baby animals being born, or learn how to build a boat that uses kinetic energy stored in rubber bands to move, or experiment with microgravity from three stories up. Students can also play games such as Code Fred: Survival Mode, which requires them to jump inside the human body and participate in its physiological processes to help Fred outrun danger in the woods.
