Live Broadcasts from Remote Regions of the World

Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants aims to inspire the next generation of scientists, explorers, and conservationists by bringing science, exploration, adventure, and conservation live into classrooms through virtual speakers and fieldtrips with leading experts across the globe. Since its start in September 2015, Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants has run close to 2,000 live events and connected hundreds of thousands of students to scientists and explorers in more than 80 countries—and the program is free for classrooms everywhere. Each month during the school year, the program hosts 30 to 50 live virtual events for classrooms. Full day, weeklong, or monthlong events cover themes such as conservation, biodiversity, women in science, space exploration, ocean plastics, climate change, ecosystems, and technology. Textbook-sized satellite BGAN units are sent around the world with scientists and explorers so they can video-broadcast into classrooms from the most remote regions of the planet. Teachers can register their class on Zoom for a camera spot where students will be able to speak directly to the expert. Alternatively, students can watch the livestream on YouTube or Facebook Live. Upcoming broadcasts include “Why We Need to Be the Voice for Sharks,” “Conservation in a Rapidly Changing World,” “Earth’s Final Frontier: Exploring the deep sea,” and “Becoming Junior Scientists.” The website displays a visual list of countries from where the guest speakers, lessons, and virtual fieldtrips have come.

Plus: Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants also offers #BackyardBio, where students use the iNaturalist and Seek apps to go outside, take pictures, and identify the biodiversity around them. Students can then upload their findings to the iNaturalist webpage and join live events to share what they found.
