Maintaining “Cyber Hygiene” During the COVID-19 Pandemic
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to disrupt global health, economic, political, and social systems, another unseen threat is rising in the digital space: the risk of cyberattacks that prey on our increased reliance on digital tools during the uncertainty of the crisis. The World Economic Forum offers three reasons robust cybersecurity measures matter more than ever:
1. A heightened dependency on digital infrastructure raises the cost of failure.
2. Cybercrime exploits fear and uncertainty.
3. More time online could lead to riskier behavior.
So what can we do? Just as addressing the COVID-19 pandemic requires changing our social habits and routines to impede infection rates, a change in our online behavior can help maintain high levels of cybersecurity. The World Economic Forum has set up a COVID-19 Action Platform that addresses these concerns and offers three practical actions we can take to stay safe online: step up cyber hygiene standards, be extra vigilant on verification, follow official updates.
