Mathematics Competition for Intellectually Curious Learners
The Purple Comet! Math Meet is an online mathematics competition designed for middle school and high school students. This free competition is run by AwesomeMath, which provides enriching experiences in mathematics for intellectually curious learners. During a ten-day window, teams of one to six students compete with others around the world by solving problems that range in difficulty. Each team is required to have an adult supervisor. After registering on the competition’s website, supervisors can sign up as many teams as they want. During the contest period, from Tuesday, April 2, through Thursday, April 11, 2019, the supervisor selects a time to start each team’s clock. Team members then begin working the contest’s problems, which appear on their computer screens; the supervisor may provide printed versions as well. Middle school teams have 60 minutes to work on 20 problems; high school teams have 90 minutes to work on 30 problems. Each problem has a solution that is a nonnegative integer. Teams may submit solutions to problems until the time on their clocks runs out. After the end of the contest, the names of the winning teams are posted on the contest’s website. Supervisors receive reports about the performance of each of their teams. Each student receives a certificate of participation or an award certificate.
The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) has administered the NSF–AWM Travel Grant Program for Women since 1988, supporting both travel to domestic or foreign research conferences and, more recently, longer-term visits with a mentor. The Mathematics Travel Grants provide full or partial support for travel and subsistence for a meeting or conference in applicants’ fields of specialization, giving them a valuable opportunity to advance their research activities and their visibility in the research community.
