Mentorship Program Inspiring Social–Emotional Learning
The nonprofit Classroom Champions connects volunteer Olympians, Paralympians, Student Athletes, and Professional Athletes to K–8 classrooms through a social and emotional–based curriculum and mentorship experience. Sharing real-life stories, lessons, and challenges surrounding perseverance, goal setting, leadership, and more, athlete-mentors help teachers bring social and emotional skills to life in the classroom. Classroom Champions’ Mentorship+ SEL Foundations Program connects students with an Olympic or Paralympic athlete-mentor for an entire school year. The athlete-mentor shares personal video stories about how SEL skills helped him or her succeed. This mentorship program is coupled with a K–8 SEL Foundations Curriculum. The curriculum includes eight thematic units—Goal Setting, Emotions, Community, Perseverance, Teamwork, Feedback, Healthy Living, and Leadership—with digital lesson plans that spiral, 32 per grade band, to develop the fundamental social and emotional learning skills children today need for academic success and personal well-being. Each unit includes a month’s worth of resources, including a monthly challenge; hands-on, collaborative activities; compelling videos from world-class athletes; assessments; and family outreach materials. Some materials are also available in Spanish. Teachers can try the Goal Setting unit taught by Olympic track-and-field gold medalist Christian Taylor completely free for 30 days.
