Next Generation Science Teaching Through Storylines

Districts, schools, and educators across the country are working on implementing a new vision for science classrooms based on the Framework for K–12 Science and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), in which teachers support students in science and engineering practices for building and using science ideas to explain real phenomena and solve real problems. The Next Generation Science Storylines project provides tools that support teachers in developing, adapting, and teaching with strongly aligned NGSS materials in classrooms around the country. The tools help teachers explore 3-Dimensional Learning, which emphasizes making science learning all about investigations grounded in students’ own questions. Educators are invited to view sample storylines and lesson plans, and to check out the tools for designing a coherent NGSS-aligned storyline. They can explore unpacking and identifying phenomena, and sequencing investigations to help students build science ideas, step by step.
