Ocean Awareness Student Contest

Working at the intersection of ocean science and arts education, Bow Seat’s award-winning programming emphasizes creative thinking and making in exploring the natural world. In 2011 founder Linda Cabot and her daughters embarked on a journey to film a documentary—From the Bow Seat—about environmental issues impacting the Gulf of Maine. After her experiences at sea, Cabot wanted to inspire and encourage young people to think carefully about the ocean, so she began the annual Ocean Awareness Student Contest in partnership with the Gulf of Maine Marine Education Association. The competition invites students to investigate a current environmental topic that affects the world’s oceans, such as plastic pollution. Students can choose to express their findings in visual art, poetry, prose, film, or music form. A panel of artists, poets, writers, filmmakers, and ocean scientists will judge the submissions based on artistic voice, originality, and imagination; craftsmanship, including quality, technique, attention to detail, and accuracy; and effectiveness in addressing the theme of the contest (Presence of Future for 2019). Scholarships of up to $1,500 will be awarded in each of the categories at both the Junior (ages 11 to 14) and Senior (ages 14 to 18) divisions.

Deadline: June 17, 2019, at 11:59 p.m. (ET), for submissions
