Opportunity for Students to Attend a Precollege Summer Journalism Academy
TheBoston Globe is seeking to cultivate the next generation of journalists. Students in the US, who are 14 to 18 years of age, are invited to participate in the Young Reporters Competition, inspired by Home Before Dark from Apple TV+. To enter the competition, students need to submit a local news story they created anytime in 2020 or 2021. The piece should be under 1,000 words, or no longer than five minutes, and can be submitted as a file attachment or a published link. Two grand-prize winners will be awarded full admission to Boston University’s Pre-College Summer Journalism Academy for summer 2021. The competition will be judged by a panel of media industry experts, including Jenifer McKim, Clinical Instructor, Investigative Journalism, Boston University College of Communications, and Milton Valencia, reporter, The Boston Globe.
In an article in Smithsonian Magazine, journalist and digital editor Meilan Solly presents 158 resources chronicling the history of anti-Black violence and inequality in the United States within a narrative that explains and contextualizes them.
