Opportunity to Close the STEM Gap
The Siemens STEM Day Possibility Grant Sweepstakes offers K–12 educators in Title I schools a chance to win $5,000 for a STEM lab with the latest technology in their school. Five grand prizes will consist of a $5,000 cash award to be used by the school for a science lab makeover or STEM-related equipment, supplies, or technology.
Deadlines: Entries accepted once per day through April 30, 2021
Plus: Siemens Foundation and Discovery Education have partnered to create Siemens STEM Day, a K–12 STEM program with an extensive library of free, standards-aligned activities that bring science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to life inside and outside the classroom. The resources have specifically been designed to be easy to implement for educators, parents, and community volunteers while remaining hands-on and engaging for students in all grades. Siemens STEM Day also provides career profile videos and educator resources.

Teachable Moment Exploring a Mysterious Structure in Science
In April 2019, scientists obtained the first image of a black hole, using Event Horizon Telescope observations of the center of the galaxy M87. The image shows a bright ring formed as light bends in the intense gravity around a black hole. Teachers can capture students’ enthusiasm about black holes by challenging them to solve the standards-aligned math problems provided by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab.
