Program Integrating Coding with Music Theory

EarSketch is a STEAM-based program for underrepresented populations in high school computer science education. The program provides an innovative learning experience by blending computer-coding concepts with music theory. Educators can use EarSketch to challenge students to compose original songs, or as a launchpad for a coding class or club. Beginning coders follow guided tutorials to instantly apply computer-programming languages (Python or JavaScript) to create loops, construct beats, and generate sound effects. Every year EarSketch holds a national competition that is open to all students in the United States. This competition is an opportunity for students to showcase their talents in music and coding, win cash prizes, and have their music featured on the EarSketch website. The EarSketch program was developed at Georgia Institute of Technology’s Center for Music Technology and GVU Center. The resources are completely free to use.
