You do not have to go far from home to travel somewhere amazing. Every state hosts natural and technological marvels that you may never have seen. Popular Science magazine suggests 50 science-y destinations that are well worth a visit—each is within a drivable distance from the state’s largest population center. In about a half-day’s travel (often less), you can take in a natural wonder such as a glowing lagoon or search for glimmers of gold deep inside the earth. Or you may want to get to know wildlife such as mustangs and bison, walk under the Pacific Ocean and visit deep-sea cephalopods, or marvel at ingenious installations such as a Solar System model big enough to drive through. The destinations page on the Popular Science website has links to every state and indicates the driving times to each destination from the state’s major city.
