The Global OnenessProject has created an Empathy Collection of 15 stories and lessonplans to foster empathy in the classroom. Through the multimedia stories, students meet individuals from different backgrounds and visit communities in different geographic locations facing challenging global issues, such as climate change, drought, gentrification, immigration, migration, poverty, and war. Each story and lesson examines these issues from a humanistic perspective. Students, in turn, are asked to reflect on their own lives through discussion and writing prompts. The universal stories are intended to lead students to self-reflection, compassion, and the ability to bear witness to multiple perspectives in an ever-changing world.
As teachers, we must check our systems for
equity each time we walk into our classrooms. The key word here is “systems,” for
without thoughtful practices, even the most well-intentioned among us fall into
the old traps of expediency, implicit bias, and tradition. Here are a few
practical structures I use as equity checks that take very little time to
