Strategy for Exploring Current Events in the Classroom
Facing History and Ourselves offers a teaching idea that uses images to help students connect emotionally to the experiences of individuals and groups who choose or are forced to leave their homelands and who place their wellbeing and safety into the hands of others. The activities also help students consider the scale of global migration and invite inquiry and opportunities for them to engage with and interpret the news about global migration today. Facing History and Ourselves will continue to provide teaching ideas, resources, and strategies to help educators explore this topic in more depth throughout the year.
As teachers, we must check our systems for
equity each time we walk into our classrooms. The key word here is “systems,” for
without thoughtful practices, even the most well-intentioned among us fall into
the old traps of expediency, implicit bias, and tradition. Here are a few
practical structures I use as equity checks that take very little time to
