WaterBotics, from the Stevens Institute of Technology, is an innovative, underwater robotics curriculum that can be used in traditional classroom settings or in afterschool and summer camp programs. Using the curriculum, teams of students work together to design, build, program, test, and redesign underwater robots made of LEGO and other components. Students engage in a series of design challenges (or “missions”) that gradually increase in complexity and ultimately lead to a fully functional underwater robot capable of maneuvering in a three-foot-deep pool. The curriculum introduces students to the concept of iterative design and demonstrates the value of testing and redesign. The WaterBotics curriculum is available for purchase at a cost of $200 per instructor. A sample of the curriculum may be downloaded as a PDF.
