Virtual Exploration of US National Parks

The US National Parks are the embodiment of a concept emerging from 19th-century democratic ideas to preserve the magnificent natural wonders of the land, making them available in perpetuity. The conservation movement prioritized the protection of land for the purposes of education, enjoyment, and inspiration, and as an escape from urban industrialization, pollution, and overcrowding. Other objectives emerged to prevent the depletion of natural resources, to preserve flora and fauna, and to protect native peoples from permanent destruction. Studying the national parks helps to illuminate these ideas and illustrate dimensions of US politics, economics, and society that resonate today. Following are some informative resources on the country’s national parks for teachers and students:

* Brief History of the National Parks

* National Park System Timeline (annotated)

* The National Parks: America’s Best Idea

Plus: For interesting views of the parks, here are some webcam sites for virtual visits:

* Yosemite National Park, California

* Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

* Acadia National Park, Maine

Plus: National Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off on September 15, and students can share the diverse and rich cultural history and heritage of Hispanics and Latinos preserved within the national parks and through the programs and partners of the National Park Service (NPS). They can also celebrate the work of Hispanics and Latinos within the national parks. The NPS website provides information and resources to share, such as stories, related parks, educational material, photos, and videos.
