Workshops to Build Girls’ Interest in Careers in Data Analytics
The nonprofitgirls + data is on a mission to increase youthdata literacy and provide middle school girls with hands-on learning opportunities in STEM careers in data analytics. Through hands-on workshops, girls learn about data analytics: What is data? How is data being used? What are different careers in data? They will be introduced to people in careers that reflect actual real-world applications—for example, people analyzing operational data to help make business decisions; people designing databases to store customer transactional data; people designing data visualizations that will illustrate who is looking at what types of content on Netflix. From 2017–2019, this all-volunteer organization has hosted 17 events across 12 cities that have taught more than 450 middle school–aged girls. Future events include a Data Camp that will take place at Netflix headquarters in Los Gatos on May 16, 2020, and a “Women in Data” panel that will come together virtually in November 2020. Teachers and students will find details about these and other upcoming events on the girls + data website.
The ProjectCSGIRLS competition encourages girls to develop projects that disrupt the present in a positive way. The contest’s aim is to create a community of creative, talented, and confident young women building the technologies that will shape the future.
The National African American Read-In is the nation’s first and oldest event dedicated to diversity in literature. The initiative was established in 1990 by the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month, and since that time, it has reached more than 6 million participants around the world.
The nonprofit Black Violin Foundation (BVF) works with youth in their communities by providing access to quality music programs that encourage creativity. The organization’s long-term goal is to empower youth to color outside the lines and push the boundaries of music through innovation.
