Program Exposing Students to Game Design

The Games for Change (G4C) Student Challenge combines students’ passion for games with digital learning and civic engagement. The challenge, which takes place in cities across the United States, includes professional development in game-based learning for up to 75 teachers per city, inschool and afterschool game-making courses, student game jams and workshops, mentorship by professional game designers, and social issue themes with multimedia content provided by cause-based partners.

Worldwide Campaign to Engage Girls in Engineering

On February 20, 2020, DiscoverE’s Girl Day, thousands of people—engineers, educators, and others—will act as role models, facilitate engineering activities, and educate girls about how engineers change the world. Key findings from DiscoverE’s report Despite the Odds found that this simple formula helps girls develop an interest in engineering, builds confidence in their problem-solving skills, and creates a STEM identity.

Mentoring Movement to Tap the Potential in Young People

January is National Mentoring Month, a nationwide campaign dedicated to celebrating and elevating the mentoring movement. Kicking off the campaign, MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership is celebrating the power of relationships with the video “Because You Mentored Me,” showing from the adult perspective what is possible when young people grow up with mentors.

Merriam-Webster defines “mentor” as “a trusted counselor or guide.” The actual origin of the word dates back to the end of the eighth century when Homer wrote The Odyssey. Mentor was a trusted friend of Homer and he stayed behind during war to watch over Odysseus’ son. The word was then adapted to mean “someone who teaches or gives help and advice.”
